Ivy Ling Po plays the male lead in an operatic musical folk tale. A carp-spirit turns into a beautiful maiden who loves the young scholar Zhang Zhen played by Ivy. Ching Lee (or Li Chin) plays the carp-girl and simultaneously plays the daughter of a haughty famiy that had rejected Zhang Zhen as a proper suitor.
Complications arise due to the similar appearance of the carp-girl and the wealthy maiden, and a goddess has to intervene to ensure a happy ending (itself fairly unusual among Huangmei opera stories), which usually end in tragic melodrama.
The film is also known as:
The Beautiful Carp Spirit and
The Mermaid.
