Australian journalist Guy Hamilton (Mel Gibson) gets his first foreign correspondent job in Indonesia during the political turmoil of Sukarno's rule. [Sukarno banned the film from being shown there.]
Thrown in at the deep end, he is helped by his staff photographer, Billy Kwan, a person of diminished stature and mixed race. Billy has gone native, and between them they score some journalistic successes.
The unconventional Billy is played by a female, Linda Hunt. She got an Oscar for best supporting actress, and went on to play plenty of female parts. See if you can spot the female mannerisms. The film is an excellent window on the terror of being in a police state at a time of tension. Recommended.
