The Warrior King (2005, Thailand)

Madame Rose
A weak martial arts film. Kham was brought up in Thailand working with elephants; and for the first quarter of the film there is some fantastic photography in what seemed like a sentimental animal film. However Kham's favourite elephant gets shipped illegally to Australia, and Kham has to go there to retrieve his friend.

Now the screenplay degenerates now into martial arts stuff with some impossible fight scenes. When Kham gets to Sydney he meets up with a Thai policeman working there; but now he will have to deal with the gangsters. We see a surprisingly formal board meeting of the gang, and Mr Big is sounding off about some food he has just been given ... it tastes like earthwworms. You know about earthworms? Slithering creatures that have two genders without being either one. At this point Madame Rose jerks upright in her seat -- she is played as a transsexual character by the transsexual actress Xing Jing (shown in the film titles as Jin Xing).

As the story unfolds we see that she operates a restaurant, but it is part of the gang's operations to smuggle endangered animals, as well as people trafficking, drug smuggling and all sorts of other naughtiness. The gang is in fact a family dynasty, and the succession is being discussed -- will Madame Rose take over as Ms Big?

Madame Rose, the character, is referred to in the dialogue as "that lady-boy", but the issue is only inserted for added weirdness -- there is no exploration of the gender issue.

The film has also been released as
Honour of the Dragon and
The Protector.
