Woman on Top (1999)

Monica in ethnic costume A gentle romantic story; Penélope Cruz plays a Brazilian woman, Isabella, who has a talent for cooking. She gets married and the couple successfully set up a restaurant. However her husband plays around and when she catches him, she leaves him and heads for San Francisco. Penniless and jobless, she is supported by a drag queen friend, Monica (Harold Perrineau Jr., in his only transgender role so far as I know).

Isabella suddenly finds success as a television cookery expert, but the husband arrives and complications set in.

Monica is there in the background through most of the film, and despite an underwear scene, is not unduly outrageous.
