Wild Boys of the Road (1933)

Sneaking in to the dance hall
Set in the depression, the story follows some young people who set out from their home to find work, without much success.

To establish the idea of "good kids fallen on hard times" at the beginning, we see a college sophomores' ball at which one boy has to disguise himself as a girl to get in free.

A girl on the freight train
Later on, while riding the freight trains, they meet up with a tomboyish girl.

The film was also released as Dangerous Days.
