A humorous film about the American invasion of Sicily during World War 2. The Italian defenders are easily pacified, but in the second half of the film, the Germans move in to recapture the lost ground.
In a village square on a quiet evening, it is essential for the Americans to distract the attention of a German officer. Dick Shawn plays an incompetent martinet officer, and in a plot too silly to explain, he dresses as a tart; at first a fellow American, in German uniform, pretends to be with "her".
The German officer is attracted -- he must have extremely poor eyesight -- and sends the other man away; he takes the tart to his quarters.
The officer puts on a gramophone record, and a quite lengthy sequence follows of the officer trying to make progress and Shawn's character pushing him away. It is all so corny that you cringe to watch it.
