Virtual Sexuality (1999, UK)

Justine realises her body has changed A frustrated teenage girl, Justine, tries out a virtual reality machine at an exhibition; supposedly testing different looks on herself, she gets deflected into designing a perfect boyfriend instead. Suddenly there's a gas main explosion, and in one of those freak power surges that happen in films, and her mind is transferred into the male body she has just created.

Everyone runs off to escape the debris. Suddenly Justine catches sight of herself in a shop window and realises she has transformed into the virtual image boy's body.

Reading a magazine in the bath After initial exploration of the new body, it's time for a bath. Reading a lifestyle magazine, Justine is startled to get a male erection under the bubbles.

Could I borrow a hairdryer? Justine, now calling herself Jake, stays temporarily with Chas's parents. Jake is having a long bath, and the Mother makes a slightly critical comment about Jake's concern for hygiene. The nerdy father doesn't agree ... "He's a bloke who takes care of his appearance ... just because he takes a bubble bath or two doesn't make him ... " and just before he completes the sentence, Jake comes in wearing bath robe and towel turban and asks to borrow a hairdryer.

The switch routine has been done before, but I thought the exploration of the gender roles was well done, with some good, gentle, British humour in the script. However the gender issue wasn't developed in the second half of the film, and it rather ran out of steam. Good fun though.
