Tipping the Velvet (2002)

Preparing a stage act A milestone film about Victorian lesbians, with plenty of sex. They must have spent a lot of money in getting the period scenes right, and except for some modern dialogue it comes off well.

Nan goes to a music hall and discovers Kitty, who is playing a male drag act; the film follows their romances and difficulties.

Wearing bloomers In the second section they meet some friends on the street, including a male crossdresser wearing bloomers -- I think this would have caused a breach of the peace at the time, even a genetic woman wearing bloomers in an urban situation would have attracted ribald comments.
