A bisexual burglar, Bob (Gérard Depardieu), makes friends with an ordinary married couple, Antoine (Michel Blanc) and Monique (Miou Miou), when he interrupts them having a row. He shows them how to rob houses, and he seduces each of them but is more interested in Antoine. Everyday story of countryfolk, really.
Bob later sets up house with Antoine, and after Antoine complains that Bob never takes him out any more, Bob gets him some female clothes and takes him to a club as his girlfriend. This is intended as symbolic emphasis for the unmanning of Antoine, but evidently Antoine takes to the idea.
But at the club, Antoine comes across Monique again, and she is being beaten by her pimp, so Antoine stabs him.
Despite some violent fireworks, the three are reunited, and suddenly we see all three of them in femme mode, touting as prostitutes for custom in a sleazy part of the city. They evidently didn't attract any clients, and moments later we see them drinking coffee in a cheap bar. The plot link to take us to this development is far from clear, and I found the film confusing and heavy going.
The title means "Evening Gown", and the film is also released as Ménage à Trois .
Miou-Miou later played the wife in the film Nettoyage à Sec.
