Taafé Fanga (Skirt Power) (1997, Mali and France)

Skirt power
A fascinating film made by Adama Drabo, set in a village in Mali, Africa.

The women of the village do all the manual labour and the men just sit around. When one of them is going to take a second wife, things reach crisis point. A woman wanders in from a neighbouring village with a witch-doctor's mask and they use this to frighten the men into submission. Roles are then reversed, including a certain amount of clothing reversal. You'll have to take my word for it unless you're familiar with Mali styles of dress.

Actually the scenes of village life, done with the co-operation of real villagers, are quite interesting. The film is in the Bambara and Kaado languages. I've only seen a German version with subtitles, called Die Herrschaft der Röcke. The title translates to Skirt Power but I don't think there's an English language version.

Recommended film.
