This is part of a series trading on the original Scarlet Pimpernel story, and as it is a television update of a worthy original, I was well prepared to dislike it. However to my pleasant surprise it is well scripted and acted, and quite able to hold its ground against criticism.
However the story is new; a weak man is mistaken for the Pimpernel and is abducted to France. Claudette de Bridoire (Caroline Carver) is a young woman of good family, who has become infatuated with the man. When the real Pimpernel journeys to revolutionary France to rescue the fake one, Claudette goes along too on her own rescue mission, which predictably goes very wrong. She dresses as a boy, not entirely convincingly.
