Saint Joan (1957)

Joan of Arc
A nice serious version of the epic story of Joan, the illiterate peasant girl who came to lead an army in the name of God and was eventually burnt to death for supposed heresy.

Jean Seberg plays Joan, dressed as a soldier for much of the film; there are no transgender overtones: they just didn't make female soldiers' kit in those days. This was Jean Seberg's first role.
