Sadak (1991, India)

Maharani in female attire A Bollywood film of drama and passion. Gotya eloped with a girl, but he then betrayed her and sold her to a gang as a prostitute. Ravi, (Sanjay Dutt), a humble taxi-driver tried to save her but she killed herself in her humiliation by throwing herself from a window before he could reach her.

Ravi later falls in love with Pooja (Pooja Bhatt) who is also in thrall to a pimp, the evil hijra Maharani ("Queen"). Hijra is usually translated as eunuch and this is used in the subtitles of the film. Leaving genitalia aside, Maharani presents as an effeminate and camp man sometimes, and sometimes dresses as a rather masculine woman.

As the Times of India observed, the heightening of public awareness of hijras probably wasn't very positive in this particular case.

The title translates to "Street".
