Shabnam Mausi (2004, India)

Shabnam (left with friends A biographical film based on a transsexual who became a legislator in Madhya Pradesh State Government, in India. Shabnam is on the left in the picture.

The film follows Shabnam's life, from birth to a Bombay policeman. She is brought up by eunuchs there, mainly Halima, and following an accident, Shabnam is accused of Halima's murder. Fleeing, she seeks refuge in a remote village, and is eventually persuaded to enter politics.

Although the film could have been better made, it is a moving portrayal of a tender human being struggling against the odds to lead a decent life.

The title translates to "Aunt Shabnam".
