Seven Chances (1925)

Keaton at the stage door
An excellent Buster Keaton comedy, with many laugh-out-loud moments. Keaton has just found out that he will inherit $7 million, but only if he gets married today. He's very shy and blows his chance of marrying his true girlfriend. In desperation he proposes to nearly every female in town.

Passing a theatre, he sees from a poster that some woman variety star is present; she must be rehearsing inside. He goes in the stage door, obviously to propose to her.

But it is Julian Eltinge
However a moment later a man removes a crate that was obscuring the "artiste's" name: it's the female impersonator Julian Eltinge. At the time Eltinge was hugely famous and popular, and there was no need in the film to explain who he was.

There is a lot of excellent visual comedy in the film, and it is highly recommended.
