This is a pretty faithful reproduction of the Marquis de Sade's book, and it's not by any means a feel-good film; in fact it is pretty disgusting, and various forms of nastiness are perpetrated on some victims in a series of episodes. The alleged context is the puppet Italian state Salò, where certain powerful men exploited their power by sexually coercing numerous young people into acts of horrible degradation.
There's a travesty wedding sequence, with several brides, some prettier than others, and some with beards.
The English title is Salo or the 120 days of Sodom. Salò was the name of a puppet Italian state led by Mussolini during World War 2. Mussolini was deposed by his own people and was later set up as dictator of Salò by the Nazis, who wished a fascist government to continue in Italy.
This horrible film was re-released in 2008 with the support of the British Film Institute. Is this where my taxes are going?
