Dreadful British comedy. Feminist WRENS (members of the British Womens' Royal Naval Service) are frustrated at being denied the opportunity for sea duty, and decide to take over a frigate. The idea had interesting potential, but in line with much other British material at this time was spoilt by a weak script and poor casting and direction.
Charlie Drake plays a fairly unlikable male stoker in the WRNS shore barracks. Having been detected spying on the women's gym exercises, Drake is caught and locked in a store room. He discovers that it contains spare WRENS' uniforms, so he dresses accordingly. Unwittingly he gets caught up in the seizure of the ship, but he is unmasked at Pipe Down when he refuses to undress.
One of the few funny lines in the film is when Drake, still dressed as a WREN, is thrust into the ammunition hold where the ship's crew have been locked up. The ratings react in macho style, but CPO Nixon (Victor Maddern) intervenes to protect "her", incredibly with his own amorous intentions.
Nixon: Would you mind telling me your name?
Drake: Charlie.
Nixon (not yet realising): Charlie ... what a beautiful name. (Suddenly realising): Charlie??
Drake: Yerst ... I'm a boy.
Derisive laughter from the ratings at the petty officer's embarrassment.
Nixon (embarrassed and angry): Well ... get yer 'air cut!
