A seriously important conductor has been performing in Barcelona. To relax, he is taken to a drag show, and he suddenly realises that the piano player is a long-lost friend from before the Spanish civil war.
The drama is very powerful during flashbacks to before the war and to the year after it ended, and the film culminates in the changed relationship of these former friends.
The drag show is pretty tawdry and is only inserted for dramatic impact, unfortunately.
It's a French film, with much of the action in Barcelona, and some lists show the main title as the Spanish equivalent, El Pianista.
