Cynthia Payne ran a place in Streatham (in South London) in the 1960's, which became a haven for the provision of upmarket sex services. They didn't do anyone any harm, but the police raided the place and it was closed down. This film is based on those events, but is not an exactly factual story.
In fact it's entertaining and entirely believable; Julie Walters plays the lady who organises things. Many of the clients wanted unconventional forms of excitement, and there are a few transvestite characters.
At the time when the real-life business was in operation, I lived about a hundred yards away; it was a respectable street and I never knew anything of the special activities that were going on there.
