The Order (2003)

The Sin Eater's assistant An incomprehensible horror film set within an offshoot of the Roman Catholic Church. A head churchman has died in Rome, and a renegade priest is sent from New York to find out the facts. For the first twenty minutes it looked reasonably believable, and seemed to avoid the usual religious film images (such as hooded monks with their faces concealed, chanting, all interior scenes almost totally dark, etc,) but then it relapsed.

If your story is set wholly within the Catholic church, how do you bring a romantic interest into the plot? That's is not a problem; the priest is a renegade, remember.

Anyway the death turns out to be the responsibility of the Sin Eater, a 500 year old man who consumes people who have been unable to get a final confession and would otherwise be in limbo. He has an assistant who dresses in a sequin gown.

I didn't understand any of it.
