Jean Cocteau directed this art film based on the Orpheus legend, and with heavy symbolism in France so soon after the second world war. It hasn't aged well, and is now only appreciated by lovers of the genre.
It is reported that Cocteau played a bit part as an old woman, but I couldn't find this.
