A Bollywood film where most of the action takes place in New York. Jaswinder Singh Bedi, or Jimmy (Ritesh Deshmukh) is a taxi driver in New York but he hasn't got a permanent visa. He meets a girl Sally (Brande Roderick) in a club where she is a singer, more worldly wise than Jimmy, but they strike up a friendship. When the immigration authorities warn Jimmy that he can't stay in the USA, Sally and he agree to marry. As the spouse of an American citizen, he has the right of residence.
Jimmy soon gets a message from home in the Punjab to say that his father is seriously ill, having had a heart attack. Jimmy flies back to his home town, to discover that his father Jatta Singh Bedi (Amrish Puri) is in perfect health, and that the message was a trick to get him there so as to go through with an arranged marriage. Under parental pressure, Jimmy amazingly goes through with the ceremony, marrying Richa (Hrishitaa Bhatt), but almost immediately leaves for the USA.
Jimmy breaks off contact with his new Indian wife and his parents, so the father decides to take the girl to America to bring Jimmy to his senses. He has been given a contact address in New York, and when they go there, they are received by the son of an old friend who has a business there; but the friend is a drag queen, played by Satish Shah; in fact mainly just a very camp man.
Jimmy is reminded of the simple pleasures of his upbringing, and a partial reconciliation with Richa is made, although Jimmy does not tell her about Sally, and for a while he leads a double life with the two women. However Richa becomes pregnant and inevitably his secret comes out. Sally now files a lawsuit against Jimmy on the basis of his marrying Richa in India while he was married to her (Sally).
The outcome of this is -- as quite often in Bollywood films -- more sentimental than realistic.
