Arthur Lucan played Old Mother Riley, a belligerent and turbulent old woman, in a stage music hall act for many very successful years, with Lucan's wife Kitty McShane playing the daughter.
The act was transferred to film with the characters pretty much unchanged. The acting and plot are quite awful by today's standards, and in fact the films are almost unwatchable. In this one, Kitty is a showgirl and gets married to a wealthy man. To be near her daughter, Mother Riley passes herself off as Kitty's lady's maid, a cover story destined to be exploded by Mother Riley's own intemperate manners. Everything ends happily, however, against all the odds.
