Osama (2003)

Osama In Afghanistan under the Taliban, an unemployed mother is widowed with no surviving male family. As she can't go out, and can't take employment, her future is bleak. She has a 12-year-old daughter, played by Marina Golbahari, and she disguises her as a boy, calling the child Osama. The Mother can now go out, accompanied by the "son", but she can't work.

The daughter gets a little work helping an indulgent shopkeeper, but she is eventually forced to undergo religious and military training in the village. The risk of detection escalates every day, until eventually menstruation gives her away.

There is no happy ending to this moving and powerful film, which gives a clear view of life under religious extremism.

It is in the Pashtu language.
