An undemanding but fun Billy Wilder comedy in which Jimmy Cagney plays a stereotype high powered American businessman, C R MacNamara, introducing post-war Berlin to Coca-Cola, and trying to expand into the Soviet bloc.
He has an office manager, Schlemmer (Hanns Lothar according to the spelling in the film titles; quite low down in the listing too, despite his lively and prominent role).
MacNamara: Just between us, Schlemmer, what did you do during the war?
Schlemmer: I was in the Untergrund, the Underground
MacNamara (impressed despite himself): Resistance fighter?
Schlemmer: No, motorman --- in the Underground; you know, the Subway.
Later it's essential to evade the heavies who represent the Soviet Union, and they have designs on Scarlett Hazeltine, played in Marilyn Monroe style by the under-rated Pamela Tiffin. So in a sort of spy exchange spoof, they send Schlemmer across in the distinctive spotted outfit that Scarlet has been seen wearing (pic). Pity about the Adam's apple.
