The Old Dark House (1932)

The frail Sir Roderick speaks
Following the J B Priestley novel, a group of characters are marooned overnight in a scary and remote house in Wales, inhabited by weird eccentrics. There is a butler (played by Boris Karloff), and it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Frank'n'Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show is modelled on him. The film comes over as very dated now, with many assumptions about class and proper behaviour no longer shared.

The owner of the house is an old and bedridden invalid, Sir Roderick Femm (geddit?) played by the character actress Elspeth Dudgeon, billed here as John Dudgeon.
