Chevy Chase plays Clark Griswold, an average middle class family man for whom everything seems to go wrong.
He is preparing a blockbuster Christmas break for his family, and is trying hard to make sure everything goes right. However, while he is in the loft getting some things he needs, he is accidentally shut in there. It's freezing weather outside, and of course in the loft too. In the emergency he puts on an old fur coat, some cotton evening gloves and a turban, and settles down to watch long-discarded home movies on a long-discarded film projector.
Later in the film, he has announced his surprise gift to everyone ... he has had a swimming pool constructed in the back garden. As it is December, he has to use his imagination about how everyone will enjoy using it in the better weather. His brother Eddie, who is coarse and embarrassing, is making himself a nuisance, and Clark imagines him turning instead into a Baywatch-type swimsuit girl. The morph takes place without any complex technology, just a dissolve.
The film is sometimes labelled Christmas Vacation.
