No Way to Treat a Lady (1967)

A lady who needs some sympathy
Rod Steiger plays a Boston Strangler killer; he is an aging actor, who adopts various roles to inveigle his way into women's homes, where he then kills them. The setup comes across as very dated now, especially the big shoot-out finale, where Steiger's character dies on the stage of an empty theatre ... heavy symbolism.

One of the characters he portrays is this woman who is getting emotional in a bar. Notwithstanding the warnings in the newspapers, a kindly woman takes Steiger into her home, putting her neck on the line. This is only a brief sequence in the film, and we never get a clear shot of Steiger, suggesting that the director was unhappy about his passability as a woman.

The female impersonator Kim August played Sadie, an interesting double twist.
