Nettoyage à Sec (1997, France)

The double act on stage
A faithful married couple work hard at their dry-cleaning business and have never managed a holiday. One evening they visit a club with some friends; there is a travesti duo performing, a brother and sister act. (He's on the left in the picture.)

When the male half, Luïc (Stanislas Merhar) comes to the shop the next day to get his dress cleaned, things develop. The wife, Nicole (magnificently played by Miou-Miou) finds his bohemian youthfulness powerfully erotic. For a time, they take Luïc in as a lodger, but after he leaves Nicole is bored and frustrated. The husband, Jean-Marie (Charles Berling) sees this and they go to Basel, where they find Luïc performing. It slowly emerges that JeanMarie himself is attracted to Luïc but can't admit it to himself. The final dénouement is violent and perhaps not 100% convincing.

The transgender element is not developed despite Jean-Marie's lust, and is only introduced in the first place to establish Luïc's bohemian credentials. Nonetheless a powerful film (by Anne Fontaine).

The film has been released in the USA under the title Dry Cleaning.

Miou-Miou played the girlfriend of Antoine in Tenue de Soirée.
