Marianne (1929)

With the American soldier
Marion Davies stars in an early sound film as a French woman who falls in love with an American soldier during the First World War. The early date of this sound production bring a number of technical limitations as well as the different expectations of audiences in those far-off times -- for example there is more comic singing than is necessary given the relatively sombre theme.

When her lover is put under arrest, Davies' character, Marianne, impersonates a male soldier to make an appeal to the General commanding. The Adjutant quickly sees through her disguise, but the General agrees to release the American. He travels back to his unit in a jeep, and she travels with him, wearing an improbable moustache. Naturally (as it's a comic plot), he does not recognise her.

It's a very long and very silly film.
