La Marraine de Charley, la (1959, France)

At the dress shop A French version of Charley's Aunt, without the punch of other versions. It is interesting to see how the French approach the familiar story. A group of penniless students live in Paris. Fernand Raynaud (then 33 years old) hears that his wealthy godmother is paying a visit from Brazil, and he and his friends decide that their financial problems may be over. But when a telegram arrives to say that she has been delayed, Charley is persuaded to play her role to extract financial support from a wealthy man.

Much is made of actually obtaining the female clothing, at a high class dress shop. But Charley doesn't know what his bust size is. (And as they had been stealing food to survive in the previous scene, I don't know how he is going to pay.)

The pretence starts The plot then runs more or less conventionally, with the real godmother arriving after all. A porter tries to remove her wig to expose Charley, as he assumes her to be, and she is naturally outraged.

The French title translates as "Charley's Godmother".
