Jean-Paul Belmondo plays a French tough-guy cop; on the trail of a drugs operation, he goes round beating everyone up. At 50 years old, and at the rank of commissioner, you might have thought he would get some of the other police officers to do the leg work.
There's a long scene-setting sequence behind the opening titles, of the then new TGV (French High Speed Train), and we see that Jean-Paul is travelling in it.
After a visit to beat up some criminals in Marseilles, he goes to a suburban police station in Paris, where they grudgingly give him a desk temporarily. To show us how seedy life is in the capital, the film-makers have a transvestite hooker brought in for charging. She is played by the 39 year-old Jean-Claude Dreyfuss, looking about 69.
The film is also known as The Outsider.
