"Lifesavers" is a charitable organisation dedicated to supporting suicidal people who phone them; but it is staffed by eccentric people who seem more in need of help themselves.
The screenplay is set at Christmas time, and on the other side of town, a family is preparing for the festivities; Chris, played by Liev Schreiber, is leaving and ends up at the Lifesavers offices; finding herself alone suddenly, she takes over answering some of the calls. Philip, played by Steve Martin, returns and a sort of coy romantic flirting between them, develops.
The film is based pretty faithfully on the French film, Le Père Noël est une Ordure. The French version is better, but this one is nonetheless well worth watching for a fun film.
The European release of this film is titled Lifesavers.
