Mai's America (2001)

A documentary on Vietnamese exchange student Mai and her experiences in the US, mostly in a small town in Mississippi. Mai goes to a gay bar and befriends a local drag queen, Chris/Christy. They bond as fellow outsiders in the conservative small town. He explains how to "tuck." Later she visits his home and gets a makeover.

She invites him to be her date to the high school prom, though she later backs out, fearing that it might cause a commotion that would embarrass him. Later he announces to her that he has returned to church, renounced his homosexuality, cut his hair, and purged his female wardrobe. Mai's relationship with Chris prompts several onscreen discussions with her friends and host families about homosexuality, but gender questions are not explored. Chris/Christy is onscreen in 3-4 scenes, totalling maybe 5 minutes. There is also one brief scene at a Halloween party when Mai is attending Tulane University in New Orleans where some partygoers are in drag.
