Toni and Edi have humdrum jobs in the village, but they dream of making it big as musicians. When they get one song published, they decide it's time to move to the big city; a kindly landlady there helps them get a job as stagehands -- better than nothing. But they tell the family back home that they have become successful musicians.
Toni's village sweetheart Elsie misses him terribly, but Toni meets the Hungarian girl Rosi who works at the theatre, and she falls in love with him.
When Toni's Mother writes to say that she is coming to town to see the boys' work performed, Rosi arranges things to let her think that they are indeed highly successful. This includes letting the boys stay in her flat, as their own digs are too cheap. Elsie comes to town too, and at the flat she discovers a wardrobe full of women's clothes -- Rosi's. She demands an explanation.
Edi explains that they are playing a part in Charlie's Aunt, and obviously need women's clothes [at home?]. Elsie is sceptical, so Edi goes into the other room and comes back a moment later dressed in Rosi's clothes.
