Kate (Meg Ryan) and her actor brother live in New York in the 21st Century. Kate's ex-boy-friend, Stuart, lives above her apartment and has discovered how to travel back through time (although we are not let into the secret).
He goes back to 1876 and the inauguration of the Brooklyn Bridge, and later to the home of the engineer, Leopold, the Duke of Albany (Hugh Jackman). The Duke discovers him and chases him, and they both slip back to the present day.
There is then an extended sequence where Leopold is astounded at various modern conveniences. A romantic interest develops with Kate, resulting in the predictable ending. Some better dialogue would have been helpful.
When Stuart first brings Leopold back, Kate looks into his flat from the fire escape, and catches a glimpse of Stuart apparently manoeuvring the legs of a woman -- in fact Leopold's period clothes. She phones him from her flat and Stuart tries to explain and states that "it isn't a 'her', it's a 'him,' if that's any kind of consolation to you" and then adds, "I'm not getting laid."
She is still suspicious, but says that she is not his girlfriend any more, so she doesn't mind if he has been to Times Square and picked up a transvestite.
