Der König von St Pauli (1998, Germany)

A made-for-tv mini-series portraying a fairly convincing twilight world of rackets and commercial sex in the St Pauli area of Hamburg.

One of the main characters is Karl-Heinz, now known as Karin, a pre-op transsexual (played by Florian Martens, a stalwart of German soaps but with no transgender track record, so far as I know).

Karin is by no means beautiful, but the role is a positive one accepted by those around her.
