Journey to the Unknown: Miss Belle (1970, UK)

Journey to the Unknown was a British series by Hammer Films with mysterious events in the plot.

This episode ran as follows:

Miss Belle is determined to see that her niece Roberta grows up to be a proper young lady despite the fact that Roberta is a boy. As I remember it, it opened with a little "girl" in her nightgown climbing a tree. She is seen by her aunt who tells her girls don't so such things and she rips the nightgown coming down. "She" tries to defend herself by showing her aunt a book containing some anatomical drawings that show she is a boy but her aunt won't hear of it and the next morning makes Roberta release her pet canary as punishment.

George Maharris plays an out of work American looking for a job and gets hired as a handyman. A few days later while the aunt is away, Maharris is watering the garden (or doing something with water) and playing with the "girl" who gets her dress wet. While she is changing Maharris sees a reflection of "her" in the mirror and knows she is a boy. He tells him so and I think the boy then cuts some of his hair. The aunt fires Maharris and he goes to the police who come around and ask the kid point blank if he is a boy or a girl. With the aunt present he says a girl and the police leave. I'm not sure about the ending of the show but I believe like in the story she is accidentally killed.

Thanks Ray
