Joan of Arc (1948)

Bergmann as Joan
Ingrid Bergman had done several Scandinavian films and then a few English-language epics before this one.

As a film opportunity, it counts as an opportunity missed; only Bergman is convincing in acting terms, and everyone else comes over as merely modern people inhabiting a medieval world. The main question remains unanswered: how did an illiterate peasant girl inspire practically the whole of fifteenth century France to follow her in battle and in spiritual matters? I'd love to know, but we are never told in this film.

In the picture, Joan must impersonate a boy to travel safely.
