Inspector Clouseau (1968)

Clouseau performs as a stripper
A spin-off from the Pink Panther films, this is a noble effort by Alan Arkin that doesn't quite make it. Partly this is the fact that he is not Peter Sellers, whom we are expecting. And partly that the character isn't quite as likeable, so we don't feel so sorry when something goes wrong.

He is desperately trying to escape from a couple of thugs late in the film, and takes refuge in the dressing room of an exotic dancer. As the thugs close in, there is no alternative but for him to dress as the stripper, and then go on stage and perform in her place. Amazingly, the revelation comes not at the end of the performance as you might expect, but when, getting carried away by the audience's acclaim, he incautiously removes his wig as part of the strip.

This sequence is identical to that in the 1963 French film, Tribulations d'un chinois en Chine. In a recent dvd print of the film, this section has been cut; it may be that there were copyright issues.
