I Want What I Want (1972)

Roy becomes Wendy
Starring Anne Heywood as Roy, a young estate agent. Roy's widower father, played by Harry Andrews, is sexually active and uses Roy to help with his conquests. One evening Roy's father returns home with a date to discover his son in garish makeup and wig: an argument follows, and Roy tells his father that he should have been born a girl. Roy leaves home and checks into a hotel; he decides that is is time to say goodbye to Roy and hello to Wendy. For the next few weeks, Wendy begins her transformation, learning how to do make up, how to dress.

A few months later Wendy is ready to leave. She wants a new start and moves to another town. She locates an apartment and is living on her inheritance. She needs to find a job but without the necessary credentials to reflect her "projected" sex she cannot get work. Wendy's apartment is a bachelor suite rented out by university professors who need to make ends meet.  Wendy meets Frank, a friend and associate of the landlords, and falls madly in love with him. She decides to consult a doctor who specialises in sex reassignment surgery (SRS). Wendy now experiences uncertainty about wanting to be a woman, wanting to be with Frank or staying as she is.  She decides that SRS is her only choice.

Frank desires Wendy but she has been keeping her distance, and when he discovers that she will be leaving without saying goodbye, he grabs her and begins kissing her. Wendy at first is scared of what might happen, butthen she gives in to her passion. Frank begins to fondle Wendy and discovers to his horror that she has a penis.  Frank assaults her and runs off. Wendy had broken a mirror when knocked down by Frank. In a moment of intense self loathing she uses a shard of broken glass and castrates herself.  Wendy is lying on the floor bleeding to death. The camera fades out. When the camera fades in we see that Wendy is in the hospital. The SRS specialist is telling her the SRS was a complete success.  She is now happy that she is a woman and now holds in her hand her passport which states she is a woman.
