Hairspray (2007)

Travolta as Edna Turnblad
Much more entertaining than the rather grotesque original, this film is an all-singing all-dancing story of a slightly plump girl, Tracy Turnblad, who eventually wins a dancing championship. She gets to practise with a black dance social group, and the issue of racial injustice at the time (1962) is a constant thread in the story.

John Travolta plays Tracy's Mother, Edna.

Tracy's father fools the police
There is dirty work afoot to try to prevent Tracy from getting to the competition final; her father dresses like her as a decoy.
