Hinokio (2005, Japan)

A film about a young boy who can't go to school, so his Dad builds him a robot for him to control, to go in his place. Anyhow, the robot gets bullied but the bullies become his friends. Halfway through the film, the leader of the gang reveals herself to be a girl, not a boy. At a young age, it's hard to tell, but with her hair cut short and wearing boys clothes, I really couldn't tell. The voice didn't give it away either. It's implied that she is merely a grumpy rebel, and nothing more is made of it - it's a simple aside to the storyline.

The young actress is called Mikako Tabe, and she plays the character of 'Jun' in the film.

I was annoyed that such a successful revelation wasn't used more in the film, and that the central character chooses a traditional long-haired schoolgirl to be his girlfriend, instead of the tomboy, who he's closer friends with. Anyhow, a very successful transgender portrayal from a central character in the story.
