A most powerful and moving film, centring on the period of extreme violence in the period around the independence and partition of India and the formation of Pakistan.
The main character, Saketh Ram, a Hindu, gets caught up in religious violence in Calcutta, and sees his wife brutally raped and killed by Muslim fanatics. Setting out personally to kill as many Muslims as he can, he eventually becomes a member of a fanatical Hindu group dedicated to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Although Gandhi was himself a Hindu, he taught that the respective communities should live in harmony and brotherhood, and he was condemned by Hindu extremists for what they saw as excessive appeasement of Muslims.
Saketh Ram eventually fulfils his appointment with destiny, but not until after getting involved in more religious violence during which his loyalties turn out not to be so clear-cut as he thought. Finally on 30th January 1948, he manages to be at the prayer ground in New Delhi where Gandhi will be ...
During the early stages of his recruitment to the extremist group, he is given an opiate and during a hallucination, he sees the Maharajah who is the leader of the group morph briefly into Saketh's murdered wife.
