Director: Barbara Hammer
Transgender Cast: Mildred Gerestant (aka Dred), Denise Coles (aka Mistah), others
66 min. Sundance Film Festival 2001. Arty, experimental, mock- or pseudo-documentary film looks at depictions of lesbians in film and print, using mostly archival and some new footage. There are numerous depictions of lesbians in all degrees of butch drag, including the two drag kings listed in the cast above. The film intersplices newsreel footage with hardcore lesbian sex films (ironically made by straight men for consumption by straight men), redubs voices to say things that were not said, and splatters paint over just about everything.
It lacks context, analysis, or much of a point of view and comes across as mean-spirited. Annoying and unfair at best, it was roundly loathed and detested by most of the audience at the screening I attended. Even the most liberal lesbians walked out.
