Goodnight Sweetheart (1944)

The undercover reporter in drag A newspaper reporter Johnny Newsome (Robert Livingstone) leaves the big city to move to a small town to run a newspaper that he half owns. His aggressive style drives him to attack Judge Rutherford who is running for mayor, and looking for evidence of sexual misconduct, he doesn’t find any. So he stays at a local hotel in drag, calling himself Marie Stevens (and looking remarkably convincing) and announces that she will spill the beans about the judge’s misdemeanours, intending that this will encourage real scandal to be revealed by other people.
