Kano is 18 years old, and he is an expert swordsman in feudal Japan in the nineteenth century. He is androgynous in appearance, and some would describe him as beautiful. Kano has not cut his hair in a masculine style like the others.
He joins a militia unit, and Tashiro, another man in the unit, makes sexual advances to Kano but Kano rejects him. In fact he takes another samurai, Yuzawa, as a lover. Yuzawa becomes jealous when he learns that Kano still thinks of Tashiro.
The commander is worried that these passions will disrupt the effectiveness of his command, so he arranges for Yamazaki to take Kano to a brothel, and Kano goes along, but is unable to perform.
In fact in today's terms we would say that Kano is a transsexual; s/he is clearly feminine in mentality and appearance. However this theme is not especially developed in the film.
The film is also knowwn as Taboo.
