A black comedy in which two drug addicts, Stretch (British Tim Roth) and Spoon (Tupac Shakur) decide to kick the habit after their female friend, singer Cookie (Thandie Newton) nearly dies; there are some overtones of Lady Sings the Blues here.
They find that the system and the bureaucracy don't make it easy to get treatment, either in the emergency for Cookie, or for themselves, hence the title of the film.
Early on they're watching television together ands there's a sort of Jerry Springer programme with a transsexual theme.
Cookie: What you watchin'?
Stretch: Man had a sex change, now he's a lesbian.
Cookie: Huh?
Spoon: There's some crazy people in this world.
Stretch: Man had a sex change, now he a lesbian.
Cookie: Let me get this straight? A guy cuts off his dick but he doesn't do it to sleep with a man as a woman, he does it to sleep with a woman as a woman?
Stretch: Yeah.
Cookie: Seems to me like he could've saved a lot of money by keeping his dick and just giving women head.
Stretch: Yeah but then he wouldn't be a lesbian would he?
