Fahrenheit 451 (1966, UK)

The headmistress is keeping them under observation
A strange science fiction film that suffers from a too-literal adaptation from a novel. In a strange future world, all books are banned because they are the medium of subversive ideas, and the fire brigades -- no longer needed as such because of fire-resistant building materials -- now devote their time to finding secret hordes of illicit books and burning them. (The ignition temperature of paper is 451 degrees Fahrenheit.)

One of the problems for sci-fi films set on earth is just how to implement the feel of the future, and funny salutes and uniforms coupled with ancient fire-engine adaptations (with the crew riding standing up on external platforms) tend to make you snigger.

A teacher goes to her school with a young man she has met, and Anton Diffring (who plays an authoritarian role elsewhere in the film) momentarily watches them through a doorway, as the school headmistress.
