Fluttering Hearts (1927)

The millionaire is kitted out as a woman
Charlie Chase gets hired as a chauffeur by a millionaire. The Millionaire has only made one mistake in his life -- he sent a compromising letter to a chorus girl when he was young and foolish. Now Big Bill (Oliver Hardy) is blackmailing him with the letter; he must go to a dance hall with the money to pay him off.

But when he and Chase get there, the bouncer says you can only go in if you are accompanied by a lady. Charlie Chase notices a nearby costume hire shop, but he wears a moustache himself; however a few minutes later we see them emerging, with the millionaire dressed as a woman.

The shop dummy looks convincing
However the entrance to the dance hall is down a slide -- a novelty that was popular in the 1920's -- and the millionaire falls over at the bottom, revealing his secret. They both get chased out of the place. Not to be outdone, Charlie Chase borrows a shop dummy -- a rather floppy one -- and does a very good job of taking that into the dance hall as his girlfriend, dancing with it and then sitting at a table. Chase sits behind her and atracts Big Bill's attention; he thinks she is available and goes over, and Chase manages to keep up he pretence from behind her, even drinking from a beer glass.

It's good fun and cleverly done for such an early date.
